Wear What Fits

I’ve only been saying this for 12 years, but what looks best on you is what fits. Love your skinny jeans and afraid you look “out of style”? Heck no! Rock those skinny jeans, because they hug you like your mother. Questioning whether or not your tunics and leggings, which were once your style uniform, make you look dated? Giiiiiirrrrlll… If that silhouette is yours, then that’s exactly what you should be wearing.

What’s “in style” is what fits. Too many people are focused on what’s trending. They force their bodies into styles that they think they should be wearing and the result… An ill fit. How do I know if something doesn’t fit? Here are a few tips: If it’s pinching, bunching or you are uncomfortable, it’s a bad fit. If you are adjusting it, bad fit. If it fits on one place on your body, but not another, bad fit. If it’s so tight you can see your skin through or if it’s so loose you can’t see your body at all, bad fit.

A great way to find a good fit is to focus on balance. For example, my look above has perfect balance, for my body type. The looser fitting boots and chunky sweater balance out the faux leather leggings perfectly. Not sure how to create balance? The general rule is one fitted piece to one looser piece. Love your wide-leg trousers? Balance them out with a more fitted/slim fit top. Live in oversized sweaters in the winter? That’s where your leggings and skinny jeans come into play.

Beyond balance, body shape also dictates what styles look best on you. I usually recommend a pear shape (larger on the bottom half) to accentuate your top half. Straight or wide leg bottoms will give balance to a more slim fitting top, that will show off that waist. An inverted triangle is someone whose shoulders are broader than their hips. Show off those legs, girlfriend! Take the eye down to your favorite part of your body. An apple (like me) should focus on their shoulders and legs and wear draping tops to take the attention away from the tummy area.

At this point in the fashion world, what’s in style is a great fit. If you love how it looks and how it makes you feel, then it’s perfectly in style. If you still don’t know what fits, call me. I specialized in fit and can help you find pieces, whether it’s in your closet or at your favorite store you didn’t know you should be shopping at.
