Spring Trend: Mixing Vibes

“How do you describe your personal style?” Is something I’ve been asked a million times. My answer is quite disappointing… “Whatever my vibe is that day”. It may seem ambiguous, but it’s the most honest way to answer the question. I mean, if you really want to know, it’s BOHO, athletic, menswear, feminine, trendy, middle-aged-mom.

Today, I’m working with a client who is in her 50’s, trendy, but sophisticated. What I wear to the meeting will reflect that. A pair of athletic tuxedo pants, zipped half way at the ankle, pointy pumps, a sheer lace blouse with a bold colored blazer on top. There isn’t a word to describe this in the fashion world. It’s just mixing different vibes, based on my mood and appropriateness of the occasion.

I used to get stuck. Thinking my entire look had to have a consistent color pattern and vibe. The blue in the stripes of my top didn’t match perfectly with my denim, and I couldn’t get past it. Now, fashion is so much more relaxed. Funky silhouettes, mixing patterns, unexpected textures and colors. It’s all about what vibe you’re feeling that day and serving it.

Not totally sure how to mix vibes? Try something unexpected. A super lightweight, feminine spring dress, paired with a black moto jacket, lace socks and black Mary Janes. A combination of sweet and tough. Or how about a pair of wide leg trousers, worn with sneakers and a graphic tee. It’s athletic and business together. And there’s always the controversial dress over pants combination. Worn with the boldest intent of mixing vibes.

Whatever your personal style is, mix it up. Woke up feeling tired and puffy, go grunge. Woke up from the best night sleep of your life, go chic. Woke up and have no idea what to wear? Go with whatever your heart desires.
